Merzbow (real name Masami Akita) is an incredibly popular Japanese noise musician. And by "incredibly popular noise musician," I mean most people outside of 4chan have never heard of him at all. He's been recording music since 1979 and released over 300 albums to date, using every kind of style and sound imaginable to form his own unique noise. Noise music is a very extreme genre that I've never particularly enjoyed, which makes Merzbow the perfect person to teach Kevin what extreme genres are all about.
As for you guys, here's a band that's far more mainstream than Merzbow, the American band Thee Oh Sees! These guys are a garage/psychadelic rock band (see: retro sounding), and honestly could've fooled me if they had told me they were from the 60s. These guys are also known for releasing a ton of records or songs every couple of months, as well as changing their band name four times in the last 15 years. But their aptitude at psychadelia is next to none, knowing all the ins and outs of the style, whether it's on a fast song or a slow one. Check them out quickly, before they cause a resurgence of tie-dye t-shirts as a popular fashion trend. I'd like to extend a big thanks to Matthew from Canada for this excellent suggestion. You rule, dude!
